So as most people know by now I am a huge Flash fan. I own every comic from the trial of Barry Allen for killing Professor Zoom to the rebirth of Barry Allen. That means I own every Wally West and it took me years to build that. So when the Arrow introduced Barry and then Flash came to be, I about peed my pants in excitement.
I watched the first season with my eyes glued to the TV and loved seeing all the people being brought in that I knew from the comics. I think they did an amazing job. I knew right away when they killed off his mom that the reverse flash did it as that was the whole thing of Flash Rebirth. Originally, that was never part of the series but they brought it into the story because one of the great things about Barry Allen was that he fought Professor Zoom throughout time on his cosmic treadmill. I loved seeing that they were somewhat loyal to the comics; it made my year. Even though I was too young to see the old show, I went back and binge watched it years before this show ever came out. As most comic fans know when you love a character you have to absorb everything.
So without going farther down the rabbit hole that is my love for Flash, lets get into the show. So what were my thoughts on the first season - pretty awesome! They changed some things, such as Professor Zoom to being the Reverse Flash. He was a reverse Flash yes but his name was Professor Zoom. He was obsessed with Flash and came back in time to meet him, but in finding out he was destined to be the bad guy he went nuts and spent the time fighting him. Then they fought for years before the whole 'kill his mom' thing.
Now of course the whole blowing up the reactor and meta-humans thing was not in the comics to my knowledge. So of course they got some things wrong as well but I am not here to talk about what you already saw, I am here to talk about what you are about to see. I am talking about Season 2.
So first let’s cover the new Emblem! Finally, we get the lighting bolt on white. It looks amazing. The emblem change is minor but again it is going back to the comics. Another big reveal and spoiler if you have not finished season one, Jay Garrick is coming from Earth 2 and the casting of Teddy Sears looks very promising. Jay Garrick is of course the golden age of comics and was in the JSA. Without him we would not have our beloved Flash. He was my favorite Flash, after Barry of course. I loved his suit with the helmet and shoes of Hermes. He will be an amazing addition to the story.
Now we come down to the meat of what is going down. It turns out because they went with the rebirth version of Barry and not the original, they also lead into the new 52, which reminds me of the quote from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, “This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.” As most people have found out by now the new 52 was not the greatest. It had its ups and downs but mostly downs. But you are wondering what all this has to do with the new season.
Well one new character they are bringing in is Patty Spivot who was a love interest in the new 52 of Barry’s but Barry has been with Iris for years and they have kids and grand-kids. They are a power couple and Iris is engrained in the Flash mythos that there was no need to change it. Now they could just be using her for the story and not a love interest. As before new 52 she was a friend of the Flash, but TV needs drama. Before we get into the next change in the new 52 I would like to say the change to Wally West, turned him African American and made him a graffiti delinquent. There was no need to make him a delinquent as Wally never was. In fact, that seems to be stereotypical of DC. They might have changed Wally’s race but kept Iris however as Caucasian. I could care less about race, it is the back-story that bugs me. Wally was established in the comics. In fact, he was the Flash we all grew up with. He saved the world on countless occasions, so lets reboot him and change his entire back story because that won't ruin people's childhoods.
Now the show with the new casting of Keiynan Lonsdale could be great. Iris casting worked great so maybe this will. Just please stick to Wally being the president of the Flash fan club, who loved Flash so much that he recreated what happened to Flash and became Kid Flash in the yellow and red. Not the metal one in the new 52. Stay with the Wally that comic fans loved and have grown up with. Don’t ruin our image of the Flash like DC has already done.
So I am super excited for this new season and I can’t wait to see what will happen. Just please keep our Flash lore intact.
