Hollywood and Wrestling have been trading it's actors/athletes/performers/entertainers/whatever you'd like to call them, for many years. Actors have migrated into the wrestling business and even more so, wrestlers have made their mark in the Hollywood system.
Most recently, a very exciting crossover has happened, which is leading into WWE's second biggest event of the year, SummerSlam. That crossover is Arrow and upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles star, Stephen Amell, who made his way into the ring. And in a more exciting fashion than a lot of experienced wrestlers do.
What started as a very organic deal, has naturally expanded into an actual match.
WWE for a short amount of time, was bringing in guest celebrities to host their weekly live event, Monday Night Raw. With entertainers ranging from singer Rob Zombie, game show host Bob Barker, NBA team owner Mark Cuban and others, coming in every week to help promote their product and get involved in the show.
A little late to the game, Stephen Amell started growing in popularity with his hit TV show Arrow and wanted to get himself in the mix of hosting Raw. He started working his own campaign on Twitter and Facebook, with only hopes to host... And if that meant wrestling, he was game for that, too.
When it seemed like the WWE wasn't noticing, we see Amell in attendance just as a fan. They acknowledged him but that was about it. Until WWE character Stardust (a delusional Cody Rhodes) got in his face. What seemed like a little bit of fan service and the end of a 'program', turned into a fun Twitter feud between the two.
Wrestlers and other stars in the entertainment world have fun feuds with each other all the time and this was no different. Stardust, always staying in character, kept calling out the Green Arrow like he was a real person and that Stephen Amell was just a facade. In which case Amell fired back with, "if I actually have everyone fooled, you're in huge amounts of trouble". Of course in reference to Arrow's skills and abilities.
On the 8/10 edition of Raw, Stephen Amell was in attendance again, this time he was provoked enough to actually get in the ring and he looked impressive. This lead to a backstage segment with HHH, that ended with an official match announcement with Amell teaming with hero type character Neville vs. King Barrett and Stardust.
I always love when different forms of entertainment cross paths. I'm a huge fan of both wrestling and comics so seeing this come to fruition is like a dream come true. I cannot wait till August 23rd to see what this match will have to offer.
With all the excitement surrounding this upcoming match, I wanted to show some of the other awesome switches made between Wrestling and Hollywood. The list of actors who've made it to the WWE is much smaller than the other way around but here are some of them.
David Arquette was actually WCW champion!
Diamond Dallas Page has made his way into a few movies, including my favorite one, The Devil's Rejects.
Kevin Nash has been in a few comic based movies, playing the roles of the Russian in Punisher, Super Shredder and Odin.
George the Animal Steele was playing actor Tor Johnson (also a wrestler) in Ed Wood
The Rock is the biggest star almost ever in both worlds.
And even though he's gotten some bad press lately, Hulk Hogan can't go unnoticed.
Most people don't even know that Tyler Mane was once a wrestler, acting as Michael Myers, Sabretooth and others.
Macho Man was the Bonesaw!!!
Seth Green tried wrestling. He's pretty tiny.
Rampage Jackson is playing the part of an actor who also got in the wrestling business.
Mr. T was in the ring a few times.
Shaq of course is known for being a basketball player but he's made a name for himself in the acting world. I mean c'mon... He's in the best Superman movie made.
Batista is in one of Marvel's biggest and best movies.
HHH made his way into Blade: Trinity (Which we've podcasted about)
Roddy Piper has one of the most iconic fight scenes ever put on film.
Speaking of Stephen Amell, Sheamus will also be in the upcoming TMNT film as Rocksteady. Hmmm... That's at least 3 connections for Turtles and wrestling. (Pictured with Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz)
Mickey Rourke was in a must see film called The Wrestler and then came to Wrestlemania to knockout Chris Jericho (another one who made it to Hollywood)
Arnold has made a big splash in wrestling lately. He was just inducted into the 2015 Hall of Fame and is a playable character in the next WWE game.
There are so many more but this is a fun list to get you through. Let us know some of your favorites.
On top of all this, Stephen Amell and WWE have teamed up to sell this sweet shirt for charity!
